Vino Novello (Young Wine)

vino novello wine double spread

Scrolling through my portfolio I noticed that a subject was almost completely absent: wine!

How could I have missed such an important subject that, among other things, I love a lot? The reason is that the wine photography is often quite repetitive. The usual standing bottles, the usual lights (striplights in 90% of cases), the usual setting or, more often, the lack of any setting.

In short, I had rarely shot wine because or it is industrial product photography, the one for catalogs and depliants to be clear, or it is reduced to the usual cliches of wine poured into a glass, bottles with the grapes around, and so on. Just do a search with "vino" or "wine" on Google Images to find out what I'm talking about.

At this point I had a challenge, try to give wine a quite different "editorial" treatment while staying within certain limits that, however, remain important (such as the readability of the label).

Starting with today's image, designed as a "double-spread" introduction, I will publish a series of photos that have as subject "vino novello" produced in different regions of Italy which, as you may know, is sold from November 6 and have to be consumed , according to tradition, only up to "I Giorni della Merla", said to be the coldest day of the year (29th-31st January).

I do not know if I succeeded in my purpose, but certainly I could cheer myself  drinking these nice bottles together with some roasted chestnuts.

Cioccoshow Bologna (Cinemagraph)

Last week in downtown Bologna was held Cioccoshow, a trade show dedicated, as you could have guessed, to everything that is cocoa based.

Could I avoid to attend to it? Of course not!

And to celebrate the occasion I captured with my new Sony Nex5 (very nice camera, but we'll discuss about it shortly) my official cremino (gianduia/hazelnut cream chocolate) pushers! Slurp!

Hard Rock Vegetables - Chili Peppers

peperoncino chili pepper still life

Starting today, I will post a series of photos on a subject that is one of the most beautiful, and tasty (but kids would disagree), Nature's creations: Vegetables .

The peculiarity of this series is the stone background, a different one for each vegetable, that I chosen trying to enhance both the similarities and the contrasts between the inanimate mineral world and the vitality of the vegetables.

Hard Rock Vegetables is thus a pun that refers to music (one of my favorite genres, btw) but also an attempt to condense into a few words this combination that fascinated me.

What's behind a Wine Shot

As promised here is the lighting scheme that I used on the set for the wine photo that I posted a couple of days ago.

As you can see at first glance there are some differences  respect to the set used for other shots of mine, such as the tagliatelle one for example.

The most obvious is the camera. In this case I used a view camera to which I applied the Hasselblad digital back.

I bet many of you will ask "What the hell is a view camera?" The answer may be very technical and boring (you can read it here on Wikipedia) or a easy one: the simplest is that view cameras are those cameras with bellows used by photographers that you can see in old movies of many years ago. Well, they are still used after more than a hundred years, even if they are a little different now, because, in practice, they allow to bend the laws of optics and solve many problems.

In this situation I had the problem to keep in focus both the edge of the glass and the level of the wine, in addition to not blur too much the label of the bottle. If I used a "normal" camera I would never have succeeded unless to put the camera at the same level of the glass so to have the focus plane parallel to the sensor.

Try with your camera and you will see that all points in focus in the scene are at the same distance from the lens, if this one is tilted downward these points are also tilted and not perpendicular.

With the view camera I managed to keep the focus perpendicular to the sensor with the lens pointing downward to the subject. Maybe I have explained too technically anyway but it's really hard not to, thank me to not have put into also the Scheimpflug principle.

Regarding the light scheme instead, it is extremely simple. As I explained commenting other shots of mine I prefer a type of light that is natural and as close as possible to real situations. In this case I wanted to give the impression of a window behind the subject, a little to the right and far away, that light up a room with dark walls, which is why I did not use reflectors. A natural , "autumnal" and "Country" scene that, in my opinion, goes well with the subject, a good French cabernet (hic!).

Music in Piazza Maggiore - Bologna (Cinemagraph)

I know that I promised to post the lighting scheme of the shot published yesterday but today I worked to create this cinemagraph from a scene shot downtown Bologna. So bad I could not include the music, that guitar player wasn't bad at all!

November Calendar Cinemagraph Version

cinemagraph biscotti cookies cantuccini ricciarelli

While I was shooting the image for my November Desktop Calendar with the Hasselblad I wanted to test the new image technique that is so popular today: cinemagraphs.  I switched the Hassy with Canon 5dmkII equipped with the 70-200/4 L and recorded a short footage that I later post-processed to create this animated GIF file. Well, I'm not still completely sold about this new "fashion" stuff (a video is far more efficient to be honest) but it's really funny nonetheless.

November 2011 Desktop Calendar

biscotti cookies cantuccini ricciarelli desktop wallpaper calendar calendario

What I love of Autumn are its colors. I may be trivial, but I prefer the reds and yellows, that in  these days paint the countryside and the woods, rather than the vivid green of Spring. The image I chose for this month's calendar reflects this taste and introduces a series of photographs, that I will publish in the coming days, which will have Italian biscuits as subjects. Oh yes, fans of cookies and brownies, you'll have to appreciate "baci di dama", offelle and canestrelli. You have been warned ;)

Food~0~grafia monthly desktop calendar is a wallpaper for your PC screen with a food photo and the calendar of the current month.
To set the image as your desktop click on the link at the end of this post with the image dimensions that suit your PC screen and, after the image will load, right-click on it with your mouse (or press ctrl while clicking for some Mac users) and select "Set as Desktop Background..."
